“A compelling, sparkling virtuoso”

Boston Music Intelligencer

Description

Winner of the 2022 Sphinx Organization Medal of Excellence, Michelle Cann made her orchestral debut at age fourteen and has since performed with numerous ensembles and appeared in chamber and solo recitals throughout the U.S., China, and South Korea. A champion of American classical composer and pianist Florence Price, Cann served as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s MAC Music Innovator in 2019 in recognition of her role as an African-American classical musician who embodies artistry, innovation, and a commitment to education and community engagement. She performed the premiere of Price’s Concerto in One Movement in 2016 with New York City’s The Dream Unfinished Orchestra and in 2021 with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Currently, she holds the inaugural Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and also is the artist in residence at Pianofest in the Hamptons. For her solo appearance on the Lane Series, Cann will be performing Ballade No. 3 in A-flat Major, Op. 47 by Chopin; Sonata in E minor and Fantasie Nègre No. 1 in E minor by Florence Price; Ballade in D Major, Op. 10, No.2 and Intermezzo in A Major, Op. 118, No. 2 by Brahms; and Troubled Water by Margaret Bonds.

OUR NEWLY RENOVATED RECITAL HALL

Thanks to a very generous gift from friends of the Lane Series and the Department of Music, some much desired upgrades to our space were completed in Fall 2020. This includes theatrical lighting, acoustical drapes, a green room, practice rooms, storage, and much more. We are excited to finally be able to share this space with our audience!
