The UVM Lane Series - Sona Jobarteh

The UVM Lane Series
UVM Recital Hall
Friday, Apr 21, 2023 at 7:30 PM (ET)

"Sona Jobarteh is the first professional female Kora virtuoso to come from any of the West African Griot dynasties. She is from Gambia, and her lineage carries a formidable reputation for renowned Kora masters, including her grandfather Amadu Bansang Jobarteh and her cousin, the legendary Toumani Diabaté. Sona’s skill as an instrumentalist, beautiful singing voice, infectious melodies and grace onstage, has catapulted her to international success as a world-class performer. An activist, and powerful public speaker, she has devoted her life to education in the arts and beyond, and is the founder of the Gambia Academy, a pioneering institution dedicated to educational reform in Africa to move the system away from colonial values and biases.

Once you start listening to her music, you will not be able to stop; it is mesmerizing. The chance to hear this artist and her accomplished band live in our small venue is an extraordinary opportunity."
